Learning and achieving together

Food in School

We recognise that the school plays an important role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our pupils.  Healthy eating is about maintaining a balanced diet.  This means eating foods from all the different food groups in the right amounts.  Our supplier, Panache, plans with us a varied, healthy menu with daily changes on a three weekly cycle.

We are now using a new catering consultant, Old School Catering, for our school dinners.  Old School Catering was simply started because they believe in old school values, and believe that the customer should come first.  They believe the service should be excellent, delivered with a passion and care, and more importantly, a smile.  Old School Catering are about change, about social impact, about making a different to health and society through food and education.  We have put the new menu on the school website for your information.

Lunchtime Arrangements

School Dinners :

These are served in the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 halls and are supervised by our School Meals Supervisory Assistants (SMSAs).  Children have a choice of menu:

  • Two choices of main course, including vegetarian option
  • Choice of vegetables
  • Salad Bar
  • Fresh Bread
  • Two choices of Dessert
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Water

We expect the children to show good manners and behave well during the meal.

Paying for School Meals

A well balanced meal is provided every day.  Meals cost £2.00 a day for all children in Key Stage 2 and are currently free of charge for children in Key Stage 1.  If you receive benefits and think your child may be entitled to free school meals, please come to the office for the application form.

We are now a cashless school and payments for school meals must be made online at  Payments should be made in advance wherever possible and dinner money debts of two weeks or more will result in a chase letter being sent home.  If we have to send 3 chase letters, we may not be able to provide a school meal for your child until the debt is cleared.

If your child would like to change from school meals to packed lunch (or from packed lunch to school meals) we need to be informed in writing at least 1 week in advance.  Please come to the office where you can complete a meal preferences form.  If you do not inform us that you child has switched meal types, we may have to charge your regardless.

Packed Lunches

This is to be provided by you.  Please make sure your child's lunch box is clearly marked with their name and class, as we have an increasing number of identical boxes. As the school encourages healthy eating, sweets and chocolate are not allowed in school at any time - please do not include them as part of their lunch and, because of their unpredictable nature, no glass bottles, cans or fizzy drinks.  As many of our children have nut allergies – the school is a “nut free zone”.  Below is a list of foods / ideas which are allowed in packed lunches at The Mulberry Primary School.

A sandwich, pitta pocket, wrap etc which much have a healthy filling.

A yogurt

Cheese and crackers

A piece of fruit or fruit salad

Carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, celery etc

Rice or pasta salads

Soup in a flask

Dips and bread sticks

A cereal bar or fruit bar (no chocolate content)

Water or fruit juice

Cake or crisps once a week (Friday only)

Home Dinners

If you would prefer your child to go home for dinner, please inform the school in writing, as no child is permitted to leave the school premises before 3.30pm without written permission.

Once lunchtime arrangements have been made for your child, these will only be changed at the beginning of each half term to avoid confusion. Please contact the school if there is a problem.
