English |
We will be writing for a variety of audiences, including persuasive letters, explanation texts, creative story writing and information texts. The children will also be learning how to edit their own work. Our end of year production will give the children opportunities to improve their speaking and listening skills, and also to speak in public. |
Listen to your child read and make sure they read every night. Visit the library. Help your child to learn words for our show, and to discuss what they are learning at school. |
Maths |
After our SATs tests, Maths will focus on investigation skills and on applying mathematical knowledge through a series of projects linked to our History unit. We will also continue to work on basic Maths skills in preparation for Secondary School. |
Practise times tables. Let your child do some of the maths when you are shopping and cooking. Talk to them about the projects they are taking part in at school. |
Science |
We are learning how to apply our science knowledge to make predictions and to design and evaluate our own experiments. We are also creating and interpreting graphs. We will be looking at some aspects of the recent history of science as a part of our History unit. |
Get science books from the library or watch science programmes on television. Visit the Science Museum. Visit parks and gardens and discuss what you see, or grow your own plants from seed in a window box. Discuss how foods change when you are cooking. |
History |
We will be studying how Britain has changed since 1948. This will include changes in fashion and music, and technological advances. We will also look at key political events and how Britain has become more multicultural. This unit will form the basis of all our work in the second half of term. |
Visit the library or use the Internet to find out about Britain since 1948. Enjoy the music of these decades together and talk about your own childhood and key events that you remember. If relevant, discuss how your family first came to Britain. |
Geography |
We will be looking at Britain’s place in the world over the last sixty years, and studying social and political changes in that time. The children will be improving their map reading skills and creating maps and plans of their own. |
Visit the library or use the Internet to find out about how the world has changed since 1948. Help your child to use maps to get around. Make sure they can use the Underground map. |
