Provision for Autism

Aims Statement

"We aim to provide a positive, happy learning environment for children with autism, one that engenders confidence and mutual respect.  We believe all children are unique, especially those with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  We use an eclectic approach based on our understanding of autism and the child's individual needs, interests, strengths and learning styles.  Our primary focus is to develop the children's social communication skills; helping them to discover that interacting with others can be fun.  Play and communication is fundamental to our approach."

The Provision for Autism has 18 places for 'statemented' children with a diagnosis of autism.  We have three classes of six children in each.  Each class is led by a teacher, supported by two learning support assistants.  We have a Speech and Language Teacher who works two days a week.

There is a very positive ethos within The Provision for Autism, with the wellbeing of children being paramount. We use a range of strategies, including massage, to help our children manage their anxieties.

Our communication based curriculum begins with what children with autism find fascinating.  We start by developing their ability to attend to our agenda - but what a fantastic agenda it is: things that drip, and spin, and splat...  We show the children that people are worth interacting and communicating with by using play and intensive interaction.  We teach and consolidate these important skills from the beginning so that children are ready to learn.

In addition to the EYFS and the National Curriculum, we teach social skills, attend to sensory issues, ameliorate stress and anxiety, work with children with many learning difficulties, work in close partnership with parents and much more.

Our last OFSTED Report (March 2011) said:

"There is outstanding provision for autistic pupils ... those within the provision for autism achieve exceptionally well due to the particularly well targeted support they receive ... This really is a place where every child matters and staff at all levels go the extra mile to make a difference.  Pastoral care is outstanding."
